Ep 80- Exploring The Athletic Skills Model w/ Martina Navarro

My guest for  today’s episode is Dr. Martina Navarro. Martina is a native of Brazil and a senior lecture at the university of Portsmouth in the UK. She received her undergrad from the university of São Paulo in Brazil and her PhD from São Paulo and the university of Amsterdam in Netherlands.

Her PhD focused on effects of strategies and high levels of stress and anxiety and human cognition and motor control

She has also done post doctorate work in , Switzerland was awarded the excellence, doctoral research fellowship by the Swiss government and subsequently joined the Institute of sports science at the university of Bern

She is also the UK head of the athletic skills model a framework that offers an alternative perspective to  talent development theories in the form of holistic broad-based movement education. More on this later.

Martina was also a high-level Taekwondo practitioner and competed at the Olympic level. Both her and I share a background in Taekwondo admittedly she competed at a much higher level than I did.

In this conversation, we do touch on her background and Taekwondo, but we also go into what the athletic skills model is, and how coaches can apply some of their frameworks to training and practice,

Athletes are often told to spend more and more hours training in their sport, but the athletic skills model provides a different way of looking at long-term athletic development. Emphasizing a variety of movements and movement experiences. We get into all this and so much more.

One quick note before we get started, you may have seen on social media that we had emergence have announced the dates for the 2024 Sport Movement Skill Conference. This is a hybrid online and in person event and is my favorite event of the year. You have the option of attending for the lectures, the in person coaching or both. It’s completely up to you

Right now, we are offering our early bird pricing so I would highly suggest you mark tour calendar for October 4th and 5th and take advantage of this sale!
